Follow the Art is a cinematic documentary that explores the life and art of Tom Woodruff. As a teaching artist, he found a way to share his love for art and adventure through storytelling and interactive art projects with students throughout Michigan schools. This film traces his life journey from being a street artist, sailor, and merchant seaman, to a stained glass artist, muralist, children's book illustrator, and art educator of 35 + years. This documentary is his way of giving thanks to those who have inspired him, and the many he has inspired along the way.

Currently: Planning the Next Adventure

In Jan of 2024 we hit the road to Key West for the first of many Follow the Art adventures!
All along the way we shared our art programs, and interviewed family, friends, and mentors. We retraced my dads steps as a shrimper and street artist. Check out our travel blog to share in the journey, and see our latest updates!

"The truth is I'm not getting any younger and there are so many things that I would like my children and their children to know. This film is a timely opportunity for me to share my legacy with my family, and thank the countless people who have inspired me along the way. This is a tribute to those friends, living and past, who have opened doors to a world I might never have known."

FAQs

FAQs

When did production begin?
We began this project in April of 2022.

When will Follow the Art be completed?
The projected timeline is to have this film finished by the end of 2025.

Why now?
There is an urgency to this film. My dad has faced many heart-related health issues over the past several years.  When he was in the hospital in 2022, we made a pact to start this project and see it through.

Where will you be filming?
Filming will take place in numerous locations throughout the United States.
From Key West to California, we are following the art and artists who have helped to shape my dad's path. At every location we visit, we share his interactive art programs and spread the word about our film.

What is the budget for this film?
We started a GoFundMe to help bring this project to life! We set our goal to $10,000 for our GoFundMe, and we are halfway there! We are also looking for larger patrons who would like to receive an Associate or Executive Producer status in our film to help us reach our extended goals.
All funds go towards production gear, travel, and post-production costs. Contact us at FollowtheArtFilm@gmail.com to request our full budget/expense sheet.

Is it just the two of you putting this together?
My dad is the artist and subject, and I run the scheduling, and filming.

This project would not be possible without the many volunteer individuals and organizations that have donated their time and resources towards this project.

How can I help?
There are several ways to get involved!
